In grease, NLGI refers to the National Lubricating Grease Institute, the organization that developed a standardized numerical scale to classify the consistency or thickness of grease.

  • It's a measure of hardness:

The NLGI grade indicates the relative hardness of the grease, based on a standard test called worked penetration.

  • The scale:

The scale ranges from 000 (very soft and fluid-like) to 6 (very hard and block-like).

  • Common grades:

NLGI 2 is a common and versatile grade, suitable for many automotive applications where the grease needs to stay in place.

Why It's Important

  • Proper lubrication:

Choosing the correct NLGI grade ensures the grease can effectively migrate into the areas requiring lubrication without migrating away from those areas.

  • Application suitability:

It's a critical factor for specifying the correct grease for a particular application, complementing other performance properties like stability and viscosity.

Common Uses for LUBRATEX NLGI #2 Grease

  • Automotive: It's the standard for lubricating wheel bearings, CV joints, and other chassis components in cars and trucks.

  • Industrial: Used in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and mining, for heavy-duty equipment.

  • Agricultural: Found in farm machinery like tractors and combines.

  • Marine: Lubricates components on boats and ships.

  • High-Speed & High-Temperature: Suitable for electric motors and other high-speed, high-temperature parts where soap-base greases might not be suitable.

  • General Machinery: Applicable to pumps, fans, conveyors, and other industrial equipment.
